Texas Hill Country Bike Tour

Biking is a blast!
Except for boring trips-to-nowhere on exercise bikes at the gym, I had not been biking for years. I would probably not have even dared to go on a ride except for several very special and dedicated folks. Thanks to Carlos, Beth, and our very own Micky Dee for making this trip a reality.
Carlos Richter owns Bent Wheel, and he was our guide for the Texas Hill Country tour. My guardian angel / sister Beth and I rented bikes at a local shop, and quickly and efficiently the seats and handlebars were adjusted. We also received a quick tutorial on shifting gears. I scoffed until the bike shop owner reminded me that the tour would include several hills. I imagined that it would take “doing” to really understand the principles involved and most importantly – when to shift to the low numbers. I borrowed a helmet, gloves, and bike shorts for the excursion. I am not a vain person, but a new definition for humility is born when wearing the tight, padded shorts. I kept thinking of Mickey Dee's hub picture and all of the wonderful trips he has shared with us. I can do that too! We are ready for an adventure!
We met in Comfort, Texas, a small German community off I-10 between San Antonio and Kerrville. Comfort is a charming town with several restaurants, bed and breakfasts, antique stores, etc. It is a wonderful destination for a long relaxing weekend vacation or a great place to spend the day. The folks are very warm and inviting. Before you even leave, you know you’ll be back for some more of their hospitality.
Since several of us were new to biking, the regular route was altered. Instead of the 30-mile trip, we would be biking just over 20 miles. The route would take us through the historic town and into the hilly country-side. In addition to cows, horses, goats, and chickens, we saw some beautiful wildlife including deer and turkey. The work of the farmers and ranchers was evident as we saw bailed and rolled hay and prepared fields.
Carlos and his teenage-aged son Hayden rode at either the front or back of the group all morning. The front duty was more or less pointing out landmarks and making the correct turns. The back duty was to support the last rider(s) and make him/her (them) feel progress was being made. I found myself at both places during the tour!! We did make several stops along the way, and Carlos was quick to inform us that a particular obstacle was coming up – cattle guard, one-lane bridge, etc. He also constantly encouraged us to follow the rules of the road and stay alert for cars. Hayden was truly the most delightful teenager I have ever been around. He was helpful picking up dropped water bottles and making sure our gear was in good shape. What a polite and mature young man!
As promised, there were several steep hills. I chanted to myself one-two-three-four – you-can-do-a-little-more and five-six-seven-eight – the top of the hill will be great. I made it! And the reward was both intrinsic and extrinsic. I congratulated myself on being healthy and in-shape to accomplish the challenges. The extrinsic incentive was knowing there were two wineries to visit towards the end of the trip.
Bending Brand Water is a lovely boutique vineyard and winery that rivals anything I have enjoyed in Napa, California. The landscaping and outdoor seating is breathtaking. We enjoyed the tasting menu with several delicious cheese and chocolate snacks. My favorite wine was Tannat, their signature red. The next and final stop was at Singing Water. Their production is all by hand, and they do not sell their product through a distributor. The tasting room is cozy, and the staff is very friendly. Freedom, a bold Syrah, was my favorite at this stop.
We mounted our bikes for the last time to cruise back into Comfort to celebrate our successes. I do plan to ride again soon, and this time it will be for 30 miles or more! If you are in the Texas Hill Country, I highly recommend Bent Wheel for a day you will always remember. Who knew you could have so much fun on two wheels!

Great Pictures Sally and yes, a fun ride...I love to ride my bike it's such a great way to look at the scenery. Thanks for sharing.
That must be a very fun tour !. I long for such an activity after being idle for a long time.
Nice article Sally, but you keep the bike and give me one of those little horsies. They're so cute.:)
Hi Truckstop Sally, I have a blast every summer bike riding with all my friends and it is great exercise out in the summer sun !
Awesome and vote up !!!
Hiya Sally- ditch that gym bike. You cannot beat getting out in the fresh air. I only discovered riding by 'accident at 43. You couldnt hope to have a better mentor and pal like Mickey D. And you have the whole of Texas to ride in! Do you realise how many times i could fit my home country of Wales into Texas!! or the Uk for that matter!!!
Great ride Sally. I ride my bike everyday and i love it. Thank's for sharing.
Sally, of course i don't mind you using my name and yes, i'm a biker, have been since i was a kid. Happy Trails.
Thanks for all of the nice comments. I would like to show all of you around my hidden treasure, the Texas Hill Country. Thank you very much Truck Stop Sally for all of your kind words. Let's go riding! Carlos
This was good report from you. I thought you really enjoy your bike tour. I also love all the stunning pictures here. Well done, my friend. Keep it up!
Prasetio,
What an amazing accomplishment! I don't think I could pull this over. Bravo!!
Don't forget, Comfort has many nice BnBs' too! It would be fun to pick a tour party up at their BnB on bicycles.
Great hub I love biking and the Texas Hill Country sounds like the perfect place to enjoy the wind in your hair. :) Katie
God bless you Truckstop Sally!!! We are now linked to the bicycle saddle! How did your cycling shorts and saddle work out?
"Biking is a blast!" Isn't that so?! It's easier than walking almost always if a bike has a path. Our legs and butts don't have low gears but a bike does.
From the looks of those pictures - you had a premium route! God bless you Truckstop Sally! Let's ride!
Sounds like a blast...do they make those bikes where I could just sit on the back of your and point out landmarks while you pedal? I would go just for the wine...oink, oink! Glad you had a good time! Good write! WB
I do a lot of mountain bike riding here in Kaufman county; I admit to being scared of riding much on the streets though. I love to get out and get some exercise in that way. I also pick up aluminum cans most of the time too.
This was a wonderful take-me-back-to-a-fun-place article. I lived in Houston, TX for about 17 years and visiting the hill country was one of my favorite things to do. I have some wonderful pictures and memories from my many visits.
Awesome Sally! I have the Katy Trail within a few miles. It is a bike trail that stretches across the Midwest. We frequently use it. I bought the girls a sporty bicycle built for two last Christmas. It was really hard for them to ride - I gave it to the school and they raffled it off for the Map Test incentive. All the kids wanted it!! (and mine were happy to donate it:)! What a fun hub - AGAIN. Thank you!
Neat! I'd love to look through that store! The tandem bike was ordered by mail - I couldn't find one in town. It was too hard for them to balance and Syd was already almost too tall for it. They loved that the whole school was hyped up about it. The bike was still brand new with the tags. It was displayed in the hall for a week. You know it was all the buzz:)
I'm just a big kid too so I was really thrilled and a kid I really love won the drawing! Double cool!
Great article for your ride, in the Texas scenery looked so good. I'm glad you got the experience and such a great guy at the rental setting you up! Way to go and thanks for the nice pictures too, Cheers, 50
We just had another successful Texas Hill Country bicycle wine tour, had to SAG several cases of wine for the party. I want to thank you Hub Page folks for talking us up. Come see us and ride a while!
You owned Trash or Treasure?! I LOVED visiting there when I was single and working in the Med. Center as an OR nurse at Methodist. Bought many old books and I still have a cast iron dog knick knack purchased from those days of long ago.
Your bike ride looked like fun. Did you take the pictures like Micky Dee does while riding or did they let you stop for taking the photos? I don't know how Micky does it...riding and photographing at the same time. I'd be in a ditch for sure if I tried that! Ha!
