Benefits of Sleeping Solo

If you don’t share your bed with another, then you probably already realize and embrace some of these benefits. For the rest of you – I’m not trying to persuade you to change your sleeping status. There is a little truth in the humor and a little humor in the truth!

Sheets and Covers

When you are sleeping alone, you can horde the blanket, or tangle up the sheets, or kick them off the bed entirely.

TV and DVD

You can fall asleep with the TV on. You can even plan on it. Sometimes the best alternative to a sleeping pill is turning on the TV. OR, you can watch TV all night if you want. AND cry at sappy old movies without sniffling and pretending you have a runny nose.

Cats and Dogs

Without a human partner in bed, there is room for all the dogs and cats to snuggle in. Now, they may still fight you or each other for the pillow or the spot by your feet or in the crook of your back. The best time of day for a dog (or cat) to show you that they are your best friend is bedtime.

Pajamas

Without anyone to impress or object, you can sleep in whatever you choose. Maybe it’s a flannel nightgown or a worn, torn t-shirt. Socks are OK too. Now, I have been known to sleep in the buff – just because I can do that too.

Beauty

As we get older, it takes a little more time and effort to keep that beautiful face, smooth skin, and gorgeous locks. Well, all those hours after the sun goes down is perfect for creams, lotions, oils – and without an audience is even better. Having the opportunity to brush your teeth before greeting another is a good thing too!

Books

I am an addict when it comes to a good book. Once I start, I can’t put it down. So reading a book all night is an option with no one to disturb with the lights on. Bedtime is also a great time to read those beach-trash books you don’t want to admit you enjoy.

Other Entertainment

Since this is G-rated -- I’m talking about Sudoku, Crosswords, Brainteasers, and the like. Without anyone to notice or scold you, it’s OK to take a peek at the back of the book for an answer or maybe just a clue.

Stars and Moon and Sun

Truly one of the best benefits to sleeping alone is keeping the curtains open all night. Since there isn’t anything to see going on inside – it leaves you free to enjoy the night sky. And if you are lucky, a night storm complete with lightning is the best show. I am usually up before the sun rises, but I don’t mind being awakened by the first rays shining through the window either.

Feel free to add your own! Truckstop Sally

Sally - thanks for the grins this gorgeous Sunday morning!! This really makes me laugh because I do love my husband but he is 6'2 and weighs about 250. He takes up lots of space even in a king size. So sometimes when he falls asleep watching TV in the living room - I quietly creep off to bed and lay crossways and sideways and invite the dogs up! My poor Gizmo waits every night right next to my bed - as soon as Dave falls asleep - he knows the coast is clear and jumps in to snuggle with me. Oh - and when Dave wakes up still on the couch - I swear up and down that I tried to wake him;) lol

Dust - Thanks for your note. Sometimes I will even take an afternoon nap - and my excuse is -- because the dog wanted me to lie down.

RealHWife - Funny!! I used to do the same thing. Of course I slept on the sofa on purpose plenty of times too.

WillStarr - Lordy! I don't do either. I purr when I sleep! Ha! You know, I always enjoy reading your bio. Hey Billy said your teacher. I teach 4th grade too, and I hope I inspire others!

Movie Master - Thanks for your note! Glad I could give you a smile today. Hopefully, you'll smile again when you climb into bed tonight!

This is so much fun and so true. I sleep alone except for a 10 pound dog and the occasional 64 pound boy. My favorite in your list is books. I always have 4-5 on the bed beside my pillow as I read several at a time. I love open windows too.

My husband moves all night. The dog won't even sleep with him. He is also a bed hog. It is a king size bed, how much room does he need. I sleep on the edge and don't move except to take some blankets back. They will be on the floor on his side and none on my side. He acted hurt the night I got up, got another comforter and laid down with it. He stole it too. Funny thing is, he doesn't even use a blanket, just the sheet. So why does he steal my blanket?

epigramman - I love your cats' names! Cats really do look like alien creatures when you bathe them. All that fur wetted down. A different creature. Thanks again!!

Becky Katz - Sleeping habits are very funny. I can sleep right down the middle if I want to. Ha! My youngest son talks in his sleep. When he was young, it was delightful - always laughing and happy talk. Now, a bit garbled. Hope that is not an indication of his brain.

bMalin - Oh I knew LoverMan would be a dream in bed. Ha! Maybe some background music would off-set that snoring.

Sueswan - You know, I don't like that my teenage son has a TV in his bedroom. At times he seems to be a slave to it. I have spent many a night sleeping on the sofa (by choice). Maybe the subject of another hub. Thanks for your visit!

Oh sleeping alone is a dream - literally! Great hub!

Ever since I got the kindle, I spend at least an hour a night in bed reading.

The best part about sleeping alone in my Queen bed is that I get to sleep in the MIDDLE and sprawl out if I want to.

Sometimes I'm afraid that I'd make a horrible bed partner if it came to that again. I think that everyone should have their own bedroom anyway...I like the idea of keeping my own space. It has nothing to do with how much you love someone, does it? ;)

Sslly,

I just thought of the perfect food to eat in bed, at least for me. Central Market sells these liquor filled chocolates. My two favorite flavors are tequila filled chocolate and rum filled chocolate. No mess to clean up and they make me sleepy.

Truckstop Sally profile image

Truckstop Sally Hub Author 7 months ago

Susan -- You make me think of I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke Show with double beds. It's a wonder Little Ricky or Richie were ever conceived . . . Ha! Wonder if there is a significance there with the similarities of their names. Thanks for your note!

Erin LeFey -- Sleeping is sleeping . . . and it is really a one person activity. I tend to stay on one side, as making up the bed is easier if you are only dealing with half a bed. Thanks for your note!

leroy64 -- Those chocolates sound delicious! Chocolate, rum, tequila . . . the trifecta!! And great for relaxing . . . but what if you really don't want to sleep? What is acceptable then?

Truckstop Sally profile image

Truckstop Sally Hub Author 7 months ago

Becky Katz -- I'll let leroy respond also -- but in moderation . . . red wine is quite a delight!

Chocolate covered coffee beans, of course. That will keep you awake. I seem to be on a chocolate theme. Hmmm. A foot long meatball sub from Subway, wait that will put me to sleep. Nachos with extra jalapenos and beans, now I am hungry.

Truckstop Sally Hub Author 7 months ago

leroy64 profile image

leroy64 Level 6 Commenter 7 months ago

Yes, I like Sienfeld. That was funny.

Strawberries - good. Chocolate syrup - good. Pastrami sandwich - bad idea, unless you are sleeping alone.

The incense reminded me of something. I am a sucker for the scent of vanilla. Years ago, I ran into a girl who used vanilla as a perfume and it drove me crazy, in a good way.

Truckstop Sally profile image

Truckstop Sally Hub Author 7 months ago

leroy64 -- Funny! I too love the scent of vanilla. Makes me think of rootbeer sundaes! Our kiddos at school have LOTS of choices for lunch. In addition to a hot food line (today - meatloaf, mashed potatoes, string beans), we have a salad and soup bar (today - chicken and noodle or cream of carrot) AND a sandwich line with lots of breads and cheeses and meats (turkey, tuna, ham . . .) but the kids ALWAYS gravitate to the salami. Thinking they don't get it at home. And for good reason!

Very true. I can agree with every one of the advantages of sleeping alone that you mention. There's only one disadvantage, and that's not having someone to put your arms around. Trouble is, when you're sleeping alone, that disadvantage sometimes seems to outweigh all the advantages.

John Connor - Snoring can be a loud problem. I do like sleeping with the radio/stereo on . . . which could drown out the noise OR go to sleep first. Ha!
